"All things for all men, since all men have need of them, since all men worked to produce them in the measure of their strength, and since it is not possible to evaluate everyone's part in the production of the world's wealth... All is for all!"-kropotkin
Your main problem would be the 'average' american. Society teaches us that each american owns their own little piece of america and their own set of material goods. It would be difficult to overcome this -- greed -- americanism.
you make a great point that america makes less and less here, depending on china for raw goods and a handful of places for energy needs and other resources. a general strike in china, or in the middle east, either for instance would begin to create real havoc in the US.
because ultimately i agree about so many americans,.. it is not their fault though, they are the most propagandized population in the world,.. at least three solid generations of daily, constant propaganda.
but that is really only relevant for intellectual conversions,.. i agree that is doubtful,.. but material conversions? the day they pull up to the gas station and there is no gas?.. drive to the next one and no gas,.. and so on... these kinds of inevitable material shortages will begin to spark some thinking, maybe some listening.
i have found that once people take just a few minutes to reconsider the propaganda, to doubt and dissemble the american mythology, they find whole new avenues of thought open up to them.

There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are messengers of overwhelming grief...and unspeakable love. - Washington Irving
